The translation layer supports 30+ languages including English, Spanish, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, and Arabic. Language detection is automatic on the source side; the target language is the user choice.

What Is AI Manga Translation?

Manga translation is a multi-stage task: detect the text on the page, recognize what it says, translate it into the target language, fit the translation back into the original bubble or panel space without breaking the typesetting. Most generic translation tools handle only the middle step and produce unusable pages that need full re-layout.

The hard part is not translation quality — it is layout preservation. A speech bubble shaped for vertical Japanese text needs to hold a much longer English sentence without overflowing, losing reading order, or covering the artwork. SFX (sound effects) drawn into the panel art are even harder: they have to be removed cleanly and re-rendered in the target language without damaging the underlying drawing.

How Curify Approaches Manga Translation

The pipeline runs four specialized stages, each handling one failure mode of the naïve translate-and-overlay approach.

Step 1: Bubble and text region detection. A vision model identifies every speech bubble, narration box, SFX label, and free-floating text region, with bounding polygons that respect the original layout.

Step 2: OCR and source recognition. The text inside each region is recognized — handling vertical scripts, hand-drawn lettering, and stylized SFX fonts that defeat general-purpose OCR.

Step 3: Context-aware translation. The translation step preserves character voice across pages (so the same character speaks consistently) and adapts SFX to target-language conventions where appropriate.

Step 4: Typographic re-layout. Translated text is re-rendered in the original bubble with adaptive line breaks, font weight matching, and orientation switching (vertical → horizontal where needed) so the output reads natively in the target market.
